Federal budget funds $79 million for critical upgrades to Tacoma’s historic Union Station U.S. Courthouse
TACOMA, Wash. – On Saturday, President Biden signed a funding bill that includes a $79 million investment in the historic Union Station U.S. Courthouse in Tacoma. The U.S. General Services Administration will use the $79,256,000 to make major upgrades to the building, including crucial seismic bracing that will help protect the building in the event of a natural disaster.
“Union Station has long been a cornerstone of the Tacoma community - first as a train station, and now as a United States Courthouse,” said Sukhee Kang, Northwest/Arctic Regional Administrator. “As steward of this historic landmark, GSA is committed to protecting and preserving the property for future generations. We look forward to working with our partners at the U.S. District Courts as we begin planning for these critical upgrades.”
In addition to the seismic upgrades, GSA plans to upgrade the courthouse’s major building systems, including the electrical, life safety, roofing and HVAC. The project would also include security upgrades that will ensure the iconic Tacoma property is a safe and secure home for the courts for decades to come.
The Union Station U.S. Courthouse was transferred to the federal government in August 2022.
