GSA Announces Artist Selection for Rouses Point and Trout River Land Ports of Entry

New York – The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), after a review of entries received through the Art in Architecture Program, has selected Adam Cvijanovic to design the artwork for the new U.S. land ports of entry in Rouses Point and Trout River, both in New York State.

Adam Cvijanovic is an award-winning artist who is known for his large-scale, site-specific wall paintings that often reflect themes of American history, culture and landscape. His installation Landscapes of Battle (2022), completed for the Major General Emmett J. Bean Federal Center in Indianapolis, depicts the sites of major battle operations–recognizing the building’s long standing connection to the United States military. Mr. Cvijanovic’s works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Boston Museum of Fine Art, and have been exhibited in numerous American and international museums.

The GSA Art in Architecture Program oversees the commissioning of artworks for new federal buildings nationwide. GSA reserves one-half of one percent of the estimated construction cost of each new federal facility to commission project artists. These artworks enhance the civic meaning of federal architecture and showcase the vibrancy of American visual arts. Together, the art and architecture at federal facilities create a lasting cultural legacy for the people of the United States.

A panel composed of art professionals, civic and community representatives, the project’s lead design architect, and GSA staff meets to discuss opportunities for artists to participate in the building project. This panel reviews a diverse pool of artist candidates and nominates finalists for further evaluation. Artists who receive federal commissions work with the project architects and others as members of a design team to ensure that the artworks are meaningfully integrated into the overall project.

GSA is responsible for constructing and maintaining land ports of entry along the nation’s borders in partnership with and support of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security - Customs and Border Protection and other federal inspection agencies. Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, GSA is modernizing 26 land ports along the Canadian and Mexican borders. These upgrades will strengthen supply chains, create good-paying jobs, enhance safety and security, and provide sustainable solutions to keep these ports operating efficiently and effectively for years to come.
