GSA announces public sale of the Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Light in Cleveland, Ohio

CHICAGO – Starting today, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is offering for sale by public auction the Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Light, in Cleveland, Ohio. This is one of a record number of lighthouses being offered in 2023 to government agencies, nonprofits, and the public via auction.
The Cleveland West Pierhead Light marks the main entrance to Cleveland Harbor and offers a stunning view of the Cleveland skyline.
The West Pierhead Light, erected in 1909-1910, consists of a four-story brick tower sheathed in wood. The white conical tower, features windows with segmental architraves (circular arches) and an entrance vestibule with three-part entablature lintel. There is a basement, a galley on the first floor, and living quarters on the second, third, and fourth floors.
Property Details:
- Built in 1910, it marks the entrance to Cleveland Harbor from Lake Erie.
- Lighthouse is approximately 1,800 square foot and consists of a four-story conical tower attached to a 1.5-story fog signal building.
- The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (reference #83001950) and designated as a landmark by the City of Cleveland.
- The property will remain an active aid to navigation.
Auction Details:
- The auction opens at 10 a.m. (CT) on August 1, 2023.
- Interested bidders must register in advance and submit a $10,000 registration deposit.
- Bids start at $25,000.
- Bid increments are $1,000.
- Site inspections will be offered only to registered bidders.
