GSA, JAIC Partner in Centers of Excellence Initiative
The two agencies are entering into a sprint-based discovery phase to assess strategy, acquisition, and technology challenges and solutions, including AI development platform
WASHINGTON - The U.S. General Services Administration and the U.S. Department of Defense’s Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) today announced they are teaming up for a discovery sprint as part of GSA’s Centers of Excellence (CoE) initiative. This newest CoE engagement will accelerate and expand the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) at DoD and help drive wider AI adoption across government. The GSA JAIC partnership aligns with the Administration’s national strategy for U.S. leadership in AI and coincides with GSA’s plans to establish an AI Center of Excellence.
By bringing the CoE model to JAIC, GSA will leverage the collective expertise of the Technology Transformation Services (TTS) team, led by Director Anil Cheriyan. The partnership will focus on JAIC’s mission of accelerating the delivery of AI-enabled capabilities, scaling the department-wide impact of AI, and synchronizing DoD AI activities to expand Joint Force advantages.
“The new GSA-DoD partnership reflects the ongoing success of the Center of Excellence initiative. In alignment with the Administration’s strategy for ensuring American leadership in the industries of the future, the AI CoE program will build the capacity to deliver AI solutions throughout the federal government,” stated Chris Liddell, White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Coordination.
“We are excited that JAIC will be leveraging GSA’s CoE expertise to strategically implement AI within DoD,” said GSA Administrator Emily Murphy. “Today’s announcement demonstrates the strength of the CoE initiative governmentwide. We look forward to accelerating the development and fielding of AI-ready systems with the Department of Defense.”

The Department of Defense is the latest agency partnering with GSA to apply the CoE approach to modernization, after successful launches at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The Centers of Excellence, a signature initiative of the Administration, was designed by the White House’s Office of American Innovation and implemented at GSA in 2017. As part of GSA’s Technology Transformation Services, the CoE initiative accelerates IT modernization at federal agencies by leveraging private sector innovation and government services while centralizing best practices and expertise for holistic transformation.
