GSA Saves $117M with Proposed New Chattanooga Courthouse

Vine Street site ensures enhanced security, shortens construction time by over 2 years and saves taxpayers millions

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Today, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) confirms it is moving forward with building a new federal courthouse in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Vine Street. This location provides the ultimate security, allows for expedient construction, and saves taxpayers up to $117 million.

Prior to deciding on the Vine Street site, GSA completed a comprehensive site selection process that followed all rules, laws, and regulations, including extensive stakeholder engagement. Based on schedule, cost, security, constructability, compliance with Presidential Memoranda and overall risk considerations, Vine St. was determined to be the most advantageous site for construction of the new courthouse. The Vine Street site is bounded by East 5th Street to the north, Lindsay Street to the east, Vine Street to the south, and Georgia Avenue to the west.

“We carefully considered all options for the new Chattanooga courthouse,” said GSA Administrator Edward C. Forst. “The Vine Street site is the location where we’ll deliver a courthouse that’s secure, constructed swiftly, saves taxpayer dollars, and complies with President Trump’s EO on Big Beautiful Buildings. We’re being decisive and ensuring our judiciary partners have a superior courthouse to uphold the rule of law.”

The new courthouse will encompass approximately 190,701 gross square feet; include 7 secure courtrooms and 9 chambers, along with 40 secured parking spaces. Design of the new courthouse is underway, and GSA anticipates commencing construction-related activities shortly. The Declaration of Taking was filed on Feb. 13, 2026.
