Madawaska residents help GSA name the street running through the new Madawaska Land Port of Entry

Name Our Street with a street sign

BOSTON – In March, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) asked Madawaska residents to help name the street that runs through the new Madawaska Land Port of Entry (LPOE). The street naming contest was an opportunity for those in the community to be part of history – and Madawaska responded! GSA received over 80 entries, with 54 meeting the criteria laid out in the contest rules.

The new name, submitted in various forms by three different people, will be Four Corners Crossing.

On July 21, a panel consisting of local officials, GSA, the U.S. Postal Service and U.S. Customs & Border Protection, reviewed the submissions and selected the new name. Each member identified their top choices, followed by discussion on why they thought a particular name was the best.

After discussion of the names and street naming conventions in Madawaska, Four Corners Crossing was the clear winner.

Of the many names submitted, the Four Corners Crossing will be a fantastic name that ties directly to the Four Corners Park, a well-established and growing tourist destination, with Madawaska, Maine, anchoring the Northeastern-most corner of the four corners of the United States,” Madawaska Town Manager Gary Picard said. “The Four Corners Crossing will forever appear on every road map, which invariably will promote the Four Corners Park, the Community of Madawaska, and this Northeast Region as a must-do bucket-list tourist destination.”

The individuals that submitted the selected name will be invited to attend the ribbon cutting event in the spring of 2024.

I was very excited to be part of the selection process and even more excited about the name that was unanimously chosen,” the U.S. Customs & Border Protection’s Madawaska Port Director Scott P. Cyr said. “With “Four Corners” being a huge part of our communities’ economics and traditions, we couldn’t ask for a better fit as most people identify our facility as a border crossing. Congratulations to our winners and we look forward to seeing you in the spring. You nailed it!”

We thank the residents of Madawaska for their input to the street naming process and for their cooperation and understanding throughout the planning and construction of the new port,” Region 1 Public Buildings Service Commissioner Glenn C. Rotondo said. “GSA is proud of the port we are building for our federal inspection agency partners to better serve travelers entering Maine and the region.”

The new port is anticipated to be substantially complete in late 2023, with the ribbon cutting tentatively scheduled for Spring 2024.
