GSA joined the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina on Sept. 6, 2024, at a rededication ceremony for the Alton Lennon Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Wilmington, North Carolina.
GSA’s Mid-Atlantic Region and Southeast Sunbelt Region collaborated on a project to repair Lennon, which was significantly damaged by wind, rain and water intrusion caused by Hurricane Florence in September 2018.
Congress approved emergency funding for repairs to this historic building as part of the Disaster Recovery Act in June 2019. The project repaired the building envelope, repaired and replaced mechanical and electrical systems, and completed interior finishes. Work reached substantial completion in October 2023.
Chief Judge Richard Myers and GSA Southeast Sunbelt Regional Commissioner Jeff Smith spoke at the rededication.

“This building is an amazing space. The project team did a terrific job putting it back together in a way that honors its history. I’m really grateful to be able to serve in this courthouse,” Chief Judge Myers said.
The Lennon disaster recovery project recently earned recognition as a winner in the ENR Southeast Regional 2024 Best Projects, securing an Award of Merit in the Renovation/Restoration category. This annual awards program highlights exceptional work across 16 categories, with the Lennon project chosen as one of 35 winners from a competitive pool of 120 submissions.
