GSA Will Announce the Construction and Consolidation for the Department of Education

WASHINGTON - The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) will announce the consolidation of personnel and building upgrades and renovations to the Department of Education headquarters.

The Department of Education is consolidating their headquarters within GSA’s National Capital Region portfolio from three properties to two; the Potomac Center Plaza lease and the historic Lyndon Baines Johnson Federal Building.

In order to accomplish this consolidation, the Department of Education is undertaking an extensive interior renovation of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Federal Building. This project will create more efficient space within the building, while also providing a modernized interior workspace with high quality meeting spaces for their employees.

The Department of Education has already begun the consolidation effort with the completion of renovations on both the 2nd and 5th floors. The upcoming procurement includes the renovation of interior workspaces on the 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th floors, updated and renovated restrooms with new, water efficient fixtures, LED lighting fixtures, and an upgraded building switchgear system. The project will aim to achieve LEED Silver Certification for Commercial Interiors.

Upon completion of this project and consolidation into another Department of Education lease, the building will be able to house approximately 600 additional employees and enable GSA to significantly reduce its private sector lease footprint.
