Applicants must be serving in a Federal Aviation Safety Officer (ASO) position, including members of the Armed Forces. To qualify for the initial ICAP Federal ASO Certificate, the applicant must complete a certified ASO course. Examples include, but are not limited to:
- the University of Southern California Safety & Security Course
- DOT-TSI ASO Course
- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University ASO Course
- Southern California Safety Institute ASO Course
- one of the Armed Forces ASO courses.
The other option is to provide college transcripts that show the applicant has completed the required ASO courses. The five basic courses are as follows:
- Basic Aviation Accident Investigation
- Human Factors
- Aviation Risk Management
- Aviation Safety Program Management/Safety Management Systems (SMS)
- Legal Aspects of Aviation
Renewals are required every two years. To renew the ICAP Federal ASO certificate the applicant must complete 16 hours of continuing education every 2 years and submit the renewal application. ICAP will accept 4 hours of classes that you teach in the field for continuing education credit. The other 12 hours must be from an outside source.
ICAP encourages ASOs to attend the annual ICAP ASO workshop held every January. ASOs can send the completed renewal applications to aviationpolicy@gsa.gov. ICAP will automatically update ASO certificates for workshop attendees and mail updated certificates. Please note, the ASO Workshop is not an ASO certification course. The ASO Workshop is continuing education.
