Urban storm water runoff is one of the leading causes of pollution in rivers and lakes. In fields and forests, rain is absorbed by soil or taken up in tree or plant roots. In developed area, rainwater travels across paved areas and accumulates pollutants such as oil and grease, chemicals, nutrients, metals, and bacteria which are then carried to gutters, gullies and storm-sewer systems. Heavy precipitation or snow melt may cause sewer overflow which, in turn may lead to contamination of water sources with untreated human and industrial waste, toxic materials, and other debris.PER DIEM LOOK-UP
