The new FDA Lab will be constructed at a prominent location just south of the current FDA lab, making it highly visible from Kipling Street and serving as the new first impression of the DFC when entering at Gate 1.
This facility is envisioned to showcase how buildings can be aesthetically compelling, highly efficient, and cost-effective, all while achieving an attractive lifecycle cost. The completed building will provide a space that fosters collaboration, creativity, and innovation.
Designed to meet the immediate and future needs of the FDA, the lab will have the potential for onsite expansion. The efficient design minimizes the USF by incorporating free-address workstations and shared core laboratory spaces. Operating 24/7/365, the building will not only fulfill the FDA’s functional requirements but also offer additional amenities to the entire DFC.
The building will utilize low-embodied carbon materials (such as asphalt, steel, concrete, and glass) and renewable energy sources like photovoltaic and geothermal systems. It aims to achieve LEED Platinum, SITES Silver, and Energy Star First Plus certifications. Additionally, it will be the first net zero energy BSL-3 lab in the nation, with primary systems being 100% electrified.
